Episode 6 mr. sunshine (2018 tv series)

Episode 6 mr. sunshine (2018 tv series)
Ae Shin and Dong Mae clean the mess caused by her maid and Dong Mae realizes the lower side of Ae Shin's skirt brushing his fingers. When Ae Shin sees his staring at her skirt, she stands up in self-defense, but Dong Mae grabs the tip. She looks at him and tells him that he's back to Joseon because this one moment. In a quick flashback, when the young Ae Shin saved his life by hiding him in her carriage. Young Dong Mae is ungrateful, calling her a spoiled prisoner with luxury and wiping his bloody lips with the tip of her skir. She gripped her skirt in the same way. Finally, Dong Mae releases Ae Shin's skirt and quietly walks in the rain, making Ae Shin nearly cry. When Dong Mae arrives at the tarot house, the tarot card reader, hands over a towel to dry himself. Dong Mae says that he forgot to do his job, and she writes in the palm of her hand that he's an idiot. He gently strikes her back as she passes by, and he says that it hurts.

Eugene met a familiar waiter who used to serve at the nobleman’s house with his family. He acknowledged this servant as the one who beat him when he was a kid as ordered by the nobleman. He demands to know where his parents were buried, but the servant only knows the common areas. Eugene threatens him to find the right location.

That night, Ae Shin throws her skirt outside and tells her maid to throw it away. The maid was puzzled that she would throw away such valuable clothing, but Ae Shin did not want anything to do with it.

The next morning, Hee Sung quietly arrives at his house and quickly tells his servants not to greet him too loudly. He handed the gift box to his maid and proudly walked to his home, announcing his arrival to his parents. His parents rush out and scold him for returning when they explicitly tell him not to, and he can not guess what's happening. A waiter approached his parents and informed that they could track down the old waiter and send him to the US embassy. But before the waiter can finish his information, his parents parents funnily tells him to go away. The parents hug Hee Sung to distract him from the crisis at their home, and Hee Sung gladly accepts his parents' warm welcome.

On horseback, Eugene follows the servant to the hill where his parents were buried. Nearby, Ae Shin's teacher Seung Gu was visiting his father’s tomb and Eugene asks if he can borrow some alcohol, which is used to honor those who have died. Seung Gu gladly agrees and generously offers the rest of his alcohol to Eugene without payment.

The waiter was scrambling to find the exact location where Eugene's parents were buried, but he could not find it. He explained that it had been 30 years since he buried them, so he did not remember. Eugene got angry and scolded the man for not visiting the people he was beating to death, not even once. Eugene cries for his parents, who does not even get a proper burial, and the waitress pleads on his knees for forgiveness. People born as slaves are treated like that, so there is not much a servant man can do for his parents. Eugene returns the bottle of alcohol to Seung Gu and offers some flowers for the burial site in Seung Gu. Seung Gu says that it's his father, who died during the war against America. He explained that the whole area is a funeral site for all the victims of war and looting. He notes that Eugene comes from the burial area for slaves, and Eugene explained that his parents were indeed slaves. Seung Gu seems surprised that the slave boy becomes a high-ranking American soldier, and he jokes that he might want to make up for the payment for alcohol.

Eugene returns to Glory Hotel, and Hee Na greets him with a letter addressed to him. He looks excited as he opens the letter and reads the message. It’s from Joseph, who saved him when he was a kid. Joseph welcomes him to Joseon and says that he is currently in Hamgyeong, hoping to visit Eugene in Hanseong soon. He tells Eugene that he is living proof that God exists. Hee Na sees Eugene smiling as he reads the letter and tells him that she rarely sees him smiling. He thinks about a few moments he smiles during his time in Joseon, and they all have been with Ae Shin. Later, Hee Na asks if Eugene will be willing to meet some powerful people who are curious about black-haired American soldiers. Eugene asks if her job as a hotel owner includes arranging meetings for strong people, and Hee Na explains that whatever she asks from Eugene, she asks as a woman. She then asks if Eugene still has a comfortable stay and mentions that she knows his room is being sought. Eugene said that nothing was stolen, but she commented that if nothing is stolen, there is usually something exposed. Eugene walked to his room and looked at himself on the mirror. He thought back to the servant's desperate explanation that the slaves were slaves, and there was nothing they could do to change that. Later, he thinks of Ae Shin's explanation of his noble status, and these two contrasting conversations haunt him.

Meeting Ae Shin at the inn, Seung Gu honestly admits his love to the innkeeper, which makes Ae Shin really uncomfortable. Speaking through the door, Ae Shin informs Seung Gu that the American consulate visits their hideout, and Hee Sung visits her home. Seung Gu says that it is easy to temporarily avoid their hideout, but Ae Shin will be tied up in her marriage. Ae Shin refuses to accept her fate in marriage, and she says that she will escape to another country and find a way to help Joseon from abroad. Seung Gu hands over his stolen gun and tells her to return it to the US embassy, because they are not thieves. Ae Shin is very surprised. She asks why this is a "us" situation when Seung Gu steals this weapon himself, and Seung Gu reminds her that he's always by her side.

While Eugene and Kyle were riding horses, they found a passing cart. Eugene recognizes that the cart is belong to Ae Shin. Ae Shin’s maid mentions that she sew Eugene.  Hearing this, Ae Shin opens the window to check. They passed each other, looking in silence. Kyle says that Ae Shin wants to see Eugene, and he teases Eugene for hiding something from him. Kyle and Eugene eat chicken soup at the inn, and Eugene tells Kyle that this is the first meal he has in Joseon. He admits that this is the first time he has eaten this because when he lived in Joseon as a child, he was a low-class slave and unable to afford such luxuries. Kyle suddenly feels bad for Eugene and tries to order more soup for his friend, but the innkeeper can not be found anywhere. As they eat, Eugene asks if Kyle has more information about Logan Taylor. Eugene mentioned that Japan was watching the Logan family, and he suspected that Logan was involved in a secret exchange. Kyle finds this potential investigation dangerous and warns Eugene not to interfere.

Minister Lee Se Hoo (minister of foreign affairs of Japan) talks to King Gojong about rumors rampant among Joseon people regarding illegal funds and claims that this is fake news. In the middle of their talk, there is news that Wan Ik has arrived. Wan Ik walks  toward the king, dressed in western clothes and with a stick in hand. He respectfully addressed the king with a bow, and with a hard face, King Gojong welcomed Wan-ik back from his job as a Korean consulate in Japan. He tells Wan Ik to rest from his long journey and quickly rejects Wan Ik without any further discussion. Minister Lee insulted Wan Ik as he walked out of the palace, calling him vicious and unworthy of the government's position. He scolds Wan Ik for ignoring his respectful greeting and continues to mock him until Wan Ik slaps his face with her gloves. Wan Ik said that this is his words and thanks for his kind welcome. Then, he leaves Minister Lee without a word.

Kyle assigns Eugene to a new job to protect Logan Taylor's widow, and Eugene is clearly not eager to take this job. Mrs. Taylor was exacerbated by her crying baby and ordered her maid to calm her baby. The young girl (the sister of the kid who rescued from the Japanese army) tried to explain that the baby had a fever, but Mrs. Taylor became impatient and slapped the girl in her face. Eugene intervened and told her. Taylor to show her self-esteem, but she does not want to honor the Joseon, especially because she believes that they killed her husband.

Mrs. Taylor is escorted to her home by Eugene, and he meets with Wan Ik, who is accompanied by the Dong Mae gang. In Korea, Wan Ik asks Dong Mae who the Joseon bastard in American uniform is, and Dong Mae replies that this "bastard" is an American who also speaks fluent Korean. Wan Ik shyly turned his face and talked to Mrs. Taylor in broken English about his offer for her home. Mrs. Taylor mentioned his English is suck poor and spoke back to him in Korean. She did not care about his offer and told him to sign the contract, which Wan Ik did after nagging about how rude she was.  Mrs. Taylor signs the contract, condemns her husband for leaving her in this despicable country, and tells Wan Ik to send her money quickly. Eugene catches Dong Mae giving the house another glance as they leave, and he asks if the documents they're looking for are here. Dong Mae says that they've been really looking for a place, but he tells Eugene that he can see again. Eugene asks if he proposes a partnership (to look for the document?), which Dong Mae rejected earlier, and Dong Mae rejects it again. He is open to Eugene's help, but only to find documents and not share his secrets. Eugene claims that he has no interest in the document, although he looks curious. Dong Mae's right hand, Yujo, interrupts their conversation and informs Dong Mae that Hee Sung is staying at the Glory Hotel. Dong Mae asks him to make an appointment and tells Eugene to be careful, and Eugene thanks him for always telling him to be careful when they apart. Dong Mae smiles  and confesses to Eugene that he's starting to like him, though he should not like it.

When Eugene arrives at Glory Hotel, he finds Dong Mae in the lobby and asks if he’s waiting for him. Eugene offers to let him into his room if he decide to look for his room today. Their conversation is shortened by Hee Sung, who gladly greets Eugene and introduces him to Dong Mae. Hee Na sees the trio and adds that Hee Sung is Ae Shin's fiance. In that nickname, both Eugene and Dong Mae’s gazes sharpen, and they act defensively. Hee Sung mentions that he notices Eugene calling Ae Shin to the embassy and asks what happened. Hee Na sees that Eugene and Dong Mae grab their weapons, and she asks them to take him out if they want to use them. Both of them take off their hands from their weapons, and Hee Sung suggested that they all drink together. Eugene rejected the offer, and so did Dong Mae, saying that he might kill one or two people if he drinks that night. When Eugene and Dong Mae leave, Hee Sung comments to Hee Na about the oscillatory emotions of the two men. Hee Na predicts that someone will end up broken hearted, and they can only hope that none of them will be that person.

In his room, Eugene thinks back to Ae Shin explaining her relationship with Hee Sung. He claims that they are friends, and Eugene mocks her lies.

Ae Shin’s Aunt met Hee Sung’s mother to discuss the upcoming marriage. Originally, Hee Sung's mother denies that Hee Sung has returned, but Ae Shin’s Aunt tells her that Hee Sung has visited their home to see Ae Shin. Since they were ten years late, Ae Shin’s Aunt asked Hee Sung's mother to send their engagement confirmation letter as soon as possible so that Ae Shin can get married in her prime. Hee Sung's mother does not seem to be in a hurry and praises Ae Shin's beauty and wisdom. Ae Shin’s Aunt feels proud of Ae Shin's wisdom. However, Ae Shin is in blacks along the roof in trying to return the stolen gun. She analyzed different entrances and headed for the most unattractive part of the embassy. As she slipped through the quarters, she ran into two soldiers and quickly knocked them unconscious. She apologizes for hitting them too hard before heading straight for Eugene's office to return the gun. The soldiers realize that the intruder is among them and quickly searches across the building to find Ae Shin, but she's already on her way out. She jumped over the wall and landed safely outside the embassy. She was caught by the kid who was saved by Eugene.

Ae Shin surprises and Eugene congratulated the kid for being employed by the embassy. He told the kid to forget what had just happened, and the boy happily agreed before he ran away. Eugene tries to look into Ae Shin’s eyes, but she hides behind his hat. So Eugene pulls her face mask away, and Ae Shin raises her voice, afraid that she'll be more open. Eugene pulled her and told her to walk beside him naturally until they were far enough away. As they walked, Eugene asked about her fiance, whom she described earlier as a friend. He asks if she's getting married, and Ae Shin changes the topic by saying that they've walked quite far from the embassy. Meanwhile, Eugene repeated the question and said that he asked for a genuine curiosity. Ae Shin ignores his question again and says that she should be home soon. Ae Shin says that she is indebted to him once more and tries to leave, but Eugene steps in her path and offers to walk her home, because she'll be safer with him. He says that he'll stand with her, but that's the real reason he's offering to accompany her. He said, "The safest place in Joseon is by my side because I am the most prominent." As they walked side by side, Eugene recounts his letter to Joseph: "Joseph, I worry about the cold weather where you are in Hamgyeong. I hope you're okay. All my days in Joseon are peaceful.” While walking, Ae Shin asks if he is still considering her offer to be her partner in a thing called "love." He looked at Ae Shin in silence and continued to tell: "My days are not peaceful. How could I want to respond? Ae Shin does not seem to be bothered by his lack of response and thanks him for walking beside her because this is a moment that she will never be able to live again as a noble lady. Eugene sees Ae Shin leaving with a mask in her hand.

In his hotel room, Eugene continued to write his letter: "I do not even know where 'there' in Joseon, but I keep going further to 'there.' When did you come to Hanseong? I miss you.” Eugene signed the letter and he admitted that she probably would not send this letter because it feels like a confession. The next morning, Eugene finds a stolen gun on his desk and checks its function. He finds all the bullets in place, but a piece of the trigger loses. The missing piece is on the ground outside of a metal shop owned by Seung Gu’s friend.

Kyle enters the office uttering basic Korean phrases with Gwan Soo, and Eugene shows them that the stolen gun has been returned. They are distracted by the nobleman’s  former servant, who has visited again to deliver something to Eugene. The servant gave him a piece of carved wood, which looked like his mother's, and told Eugene that his wife had saved it when they buried their parents. Eugene remembered carving the piece of wood in her teenage years, and he stared at the haircut in her memories.

Moreover, the servant also revealed that there was another man who caused the death of Eugene's parents. This person has favored Eugene's mother and made a deal with the nobleman. The man is the minister of foreign affairs, Minister Lee Se Hoon. Minister Lee deals with his whining lover, who asks for money. Minister Lee scolded her for belittling the porcelain, which he believed would make him famous and successful. Minister Lee shouts at his young waiter for placing his dirty fingers in his clothes. He kicked her to the ground and demanded new clothes. As Minster Lee passes through the city in his carriage, his servants announce his presence and the Joseon give him the way. Eugene was on a horse in the way of Minister Lee. Raising the horse, Eugene scared the minister and smiled when he said that the horse did not know how to retreat. So Eugene rides his horse at full speed towards the minister and jumped on his cart, and it makes him fall from his cart. Minister Lee fell into a puddle of water on the ground, and he yelled at his soldiers to find out who the horse rider was. He's really humiliated, and Joseon people cover their laughter when they see him.

Eugene sat alone in a restaurant for a drink, and the American soldiers saluted him as they walked in. Dong Mae joins him and reminds him that he does not like alcohol. Eugene says that he also does not like Dong Mae, but he still responds. Dong Mae says that he should not like many people, including Minister Lee, who was humiliated earlier that day. Eugene denies this and lies that his horse is just naughty. Hee Sung then enters the restaurant, and he's happy to see two of his "friends." He takes a seat between them and joins them, though they refuse to welcome him. Some drinks come in, Hee Sung is drunk and asks how the two can drink in silence. He asks why his two friends are not at peace, and Dong Mae insists that they are not friends. Hee Sung makes a joke out of this and confesses that Dong Mae is not Dongmu (the term for "friends," which sounds similar to Dong Mae's name). Hee Sung says that drinking together means they're friends, and both Eugene and Dong Mae put down their cups. Hee Sung drinks himself and asks why the two are fighting. Eugene says that they have not fought yet. Out of curiosity, Hee Sung asks who will win in the fight between the two, and Eugene says that Hee Sung will not know the outcome of the fight because he'll probably kill Hee Sung before one of them dies. Dong Mae smiles in agreement. Hee Sung chuckles at this joke and asks another question: Why are they always so angry? They just stare at Hee Sung and he considers it as a gesture to ask a series of more questions. He asks for Eugene whom he will save if the Joseon and an American drown, and then he asks Dong Mae who he will save if the Japanese and Joseon people drown. What if that's Eugene and him, and what if it's Dong Mae and him? Eugene and Dong Mae talk about it and bet who will kill Hee Sung first.

Hee Sung throws himself into a pity party because no one will save him from drowning, and he takes one last drink before vomiting. Eugene and Dong Mae are really disgusted
The next day, Gwan Soo interviews the new embassy employee, the kid who is rescued by Eugene. For his previous job, the kid, called Domi, claimed that he collects a bucket of water from a well over ten times per day. Gwan Soo does not trust Domi and tries to figure out the child's claim. Domi smiles at him despite all the misery that he experiences, and Gwan Soo becomes emotional as he sympathizes with the boy's misfortune. He walks out fanning his eyes, and Eugene jokes Domi to make Gwan Soo cry.

Ae Shin learns the alphabet in her room, and she quickly hides her books when her cousin, Ae Soon, enters. Ae Shin respectfully offers her chair, and Ae Soon asks her to smuggle rice out of storage without letting her know. Ae Shin refuses, so Ae Soon belittles her by saying that Ae Shin's parents do not even have a decent marriage, so she's much lower in the hierarchy than Ae Soon. Ae Shin does not let her walk on it, and she calls Ae Soon at her bluff, saying that the Ae Soon is asking her to do something she can not even do. Ae Shin threatens to tell her grandfather and Aunt about Ae Soon's reckless shopping habits at the hotel if she dares to speak disrespectfully about her parents again. Ae Soon walks out agreeing Ae Shin's terms.

Ae Shin returns to her English lessons, and in her book, she finds the pressed flowers similar as Hee Sung gave her. Ae Shin's maid says that she can not get rid of flowers, so she saves them. Ae Shin looks at the flowers and wonders how this flower reminds her of the person who gave it to her (Hee Sung) and the one who did not (Eugene). She puts the flower back into the book, where we can see her practicing the alphabet along with the name Eugene.

When Eugene left the embassy, he found Domi's sister waiting at the entrance. He invites her inside and asks what she holds. This is left by Logan Taylor, and she says that Mrs. Taylor threw it away to get a new one. She said that she accidentally discovered that Logan hides important documents in it after sewing the cloth on several occasions. She  handed Eugene the envelope, which read "Banque Russo-Asiatique." This is evidence of the dark funds that Dong Mae has been looking for. Eugene opened the envelope and read the document, which exposed King Gojong as the owner of the deposit. The girl asks if this document is worth a lot of money, and Eugene confirms this. The girl is happy to offer this document to Eugene as payment to save her sibling's life, but Eugene seems more concerned that this document could get her killed. He said it was frightening that Joseon's fate could be in his hands.

King Gojong told his trusted ministers that their ally, Russia, had lost power; their enemies, Japanese, distrusted; and their new visitors, the US, are just observers. On top of that, their deposit receipt is gone. He wonders if this is the punishment of the queen.

The king asked the minister if they knew anything about tracking Wan Ik’'s documents. He knows that Wan Ik is a clever man who is fully aware that he is called to do nothing and also realizes that he is being watched. The Minister assures him that if Wan Ik moves, then they will know where his loyalty lies.

Eugene takes his food as he thinks of Dong Mae's threat to kill whoever holds the document. Hee Na checks her food, and Eugene takes the opportunity to ask about Dong Mae. She asks where to start, because Dong Mae has a complicated story, and Eugene asks her to start with the Mushin Society. Hee Sung invites himself into this story and asks Eugene if he's okay after all the drinking. Eugene reminds him that Hee Sung does most of the drinking, and Hee Na reminds him that he keeps on raving about drowning. Eugene apologizes and says he'll listen to the story another time, but they're annoyed by a maid who comes to escort Hee Sung. Eugene recognizes this servant as Hee Sung's accompanying father, and he suddenly realizes. Eugene confirms the birth year of Hee Sung and Hee Sung's father's name. Hee Sung smiles until he sees the change of expression on Eugene's face. His smile fades, and he tells Eugene that he's used to the one who holds a grudge against his family. He asks if it's his father or his grandfather, but Eugene remains silent.

Hee Sung's father goes to a pawnshop and blamed the two former slave hunters for their current difficulties. The runaway slave whom they failed to catch has now returned as an American army to take revenge, and it takes a moment for Il Shik and Choon Shik to realize that Eugene is a runaway slave.

Hee Sung stands on the ledge, deep in thought. He thinks of Eugene's angry tone as he confirms his father's identity, and he sighs. Beside him, Domi also sighs and asks Hee Sung if he finds a job. The boy says that he is frustrated because he is so indebted he does not know how to repay the kindness that has been given to him. Hee Sung smiles at the kid and admits that he's an opponent, with a lot of retribution to fulfill.

Eugene waits at Eun San’s house and thinks about his new enemy, Hee Sung. Ae Shin approaches the house to asks for broken ceramics. She sees Eugene there and greets him, saying that it's nice to see him during the day. Eugene walked toward her with a thought twisting in his mind. He compares his miserable past as a slave to Ae Shin's comfortable life as a noble. He thinks of Hee Sung and his oath to destroy the family that killed his parents. She asks Ae Shin if her offer of love still stands, and agrees to be her partner in love.
