Episode 4 mr. sunshine (2018 tv series)

Episode 4 mr. sunshine (2018 tv series)

Arrested by American soldiers, Ae Shin looks at Eugene and wonders if he's an enemy or an ally. She refused an invasive search for a stolen gun, but Eugene warned her to cooperate. A familiar voice intervenes and alleviates the impasse by offering a compromise, Kudo Hee Na, the owner of the Glory Hotel, and she offers to change clothes with Ae Shin, because her dress is fitted with no room to hide anything. Hee Na shyly introduces herself to the American army and makes this special request to Eugene. He grants her request, which saves Ae Shin from further conflict.

In the dressing room, Ae Shin thanks Hee Na for her help. Hee Na empathizes with Ae Shin's disappointment over Joseon's current state, though she admits benefiting from this mess. Ae Shin asks how Hee Na became the owner of Glory Hotel as a woman, and Hee Na explains that she accepted it as an inheritance when her Japanese husband died. Ae Shin expresses her condolences, but Hee Na does not need it - she is sold to marriage by her father from Joseon. Ae shin makes light of the situation and says that she is definitely an attractive woman. Ae Shin asks how she learns English, and Hee Na replies that she's dating an English man in Tokyo. She shares that young widows are popular among western men because they see her as the main character of a sad story with a sad ending, which tends to last longer in memory. Ae Shin asks what "sad end" is because Hee Na uses the English term, and Hee Na translates.

Eugene checks on Ae Shin after she changes into Hee Na's outfit, and Ae Shin asks her maids to go for a private conversation. Regarding the search for a stolen weapon, Eugene said that there was no way to track the thief, because they found the package open after arriving at the train station. He assures Ae Shin that this situation will not increase beyond the passenger search, as neither Joseon nor the US will benefit from this publication.

As Hena waits for Ae Shin outside and watches her reflection in the window. She stares at her hankbok with a sentimental look, and her mind is disturbed by Ae Shin's maid who calls her to change back into her clothes. The maid wondered how much western clothes cost, and Hee Na estimated they would be about two bags of rice. The waiter gasped in shock and thought that her hotel should have a good business so she could afford such clothes.

Ae Shin's maid walk beside the train, and the male waiter pulls her out of the horse-drawn carriage in a romantic way. But she did not appreciate it at all and said that she could easily avoid the horse itself. She steps back to talk to Ae Shin about Hee Na and her successful hotel business. She comments on how beautiful the western dress is, and Ae Shin is jealous of her maid's admiration.

At Glory Hotel, American soldiers enjoy their first night in Joseon with a drink and a good company. Hee Na sees Eugene through the glass, and the waiter she saved that day asked who she saw. Thinking back to earlier on the day when she changed clothes with Ae Shin, she tells the waitress that she saw how he looked at another woman (Ae Shin). She wants to interrupt his interaction, but she gets closer to another woman. The waiter did not understand her explanation, and Hee Na just said that she might bite another woman. She keeps eyeing Eugene.

Eugene's superior and kind friend, Kyle, toasted and dropped the beer bottle, but Eugene caught it just before it broke. He advises Kyle to reduce his drink, but Kyle should celebrate his first day in Joseon. He makes light of his flawed right hand, saying that he cannot hold a gun but can write a poem it. Eugene and Kyle sit outside and enjoy the views of the village at night. Kyle asks if Eugene found the nobleman who killed his parents, and Eugene admits that he has not been looking for them. He judged that they were fine and vowed to kill them if he ever saw them again. During an unusual time in Joseon, murder would not be anything extraordinary. But Kyle reminds him of his priorities: Eugene must find the missing gun before he seeks revenge for the death of his parents.

During her practice, Ae Shin thinks of Hee Na's friendly welcome to Eugene and ranting about how Eugene should become a playboy. Her teacher Seung Gu passes by and becomes defensive when he thinks he's talking about him. Then, Ae Shin asks Seung Gu if he's on the train yesterday, and he jokes that he must have seen someone handsome. She mentions the American weapon he sees, and that's when Seung Gu reveals the stolen gun. She asks how he dared steal it, and Seung Gu says that a single gun is nothing compared to all other countries that are trying to steal Joseon. She agrees and regrets how Japan, Russia, and now Americans have gathered in Joseon. Seung Gu disagrees as none of these countries are on Joseon's side, but Ae Shin reminds him that he is on Joseon's side. He says that Joseon does not consider women important enough for him to take a stand, so he's on Seung Gu's side. She asks Seung Gu what side he is, and he tells her that it's safer for her not to know, just in case.

Ae Shin arrives at a school to learn English. Her maid warns her of the severe consequences if her grandfather finds out, so Ae Shin tells her that they can make sure it remains a secret. She tells the English teacher through a translation from a childhood friend that she knows some English words: "gun, glory, sad ending." She seems proud that she knows the hard English words that her friend does not know, but when she is asked to write them down, she does not know the alphabet.

Eugene's assistant, Gwan Soo, accompanied Kyle on a tour of the area, and Kyle is completely mesmerized by everything around him. A group of girls jumped by singing the alphabet, and including Ae Shin's friend. They make eye contact with Kyle, they shyly run. Kyle turns to Gwan Soo and asks how the Joseon woman distinguishes color with black eyes. GwanSoo is stunned by this stupid question and simply replies, "Welcome to Korea." The next stop is Il Shik and Choon Shik’s pawnshops, where Kyle asks to exchange ten dollars. Kyle asks if Il Shik and Gwan Soo are brothers, because they look very similar. Gwan Soo tries to stifle his laughter, and Il Shik looks suspicious of him for a translation he does not provide. Duo pawnshops shovel coins into bags for currency exchange, and Kyle ends up with some coin bags, which he finds incredible.

Ae Shin’s aunt found out that she lost her jewelry and called Ae Shin to track her cousin in the new guesthouse, Glory Hotel. There, we see her cousin, Ae soon, risking all her money in a go-stop game. She confidently reveals the cards on her hand, but a woman strikes her hand to win the round. Ae soon breaks down and hears Il Shik's warning tone in her ear: If she cannot identify the fool in the group, then she is. When Ae Shin arrives at Glory Hotel, she is greeted by Hee Na and tells him that she is looking for Ae soon. Hee Na offers to drive her to the table, but Ae Shin is not interested and looks a little uncomfortable by the stranger around her drinking and gambling. Hee Na explains that the man holds all the power in Joseon, but these guys are always at Glory Hotel. When Hee Na goes on to explain that all the Joseon boys gather there, they see Eugene enter the hotel. Hee Na notes that Ae Shin must be looking for more than Ae Soon, and she tells her that Ae Soon has left the hotel. Ae Shin asks what these women are doing here, and Hee Na lists the activities enjoyed by men and women here: food, drink, smoking, gambling, and bedroom. Ae Shin is confused with Hee Na's honesty, and when she turns to get out, she meets Eugene. She is awkward trying to justify her staying at the hotel as a cozy and comfortable dorm with food. Ae Shin tells him to enjoy his stay and she get out quickly.

Hee Na hands over Eugene's keys to him, and as he goes upstairs, she comments on the interesting scenery outside: Ae Shin and Dong Mae. Eugene asks if she knows Dong-mae, and she explains that he's helping in the backend of the hotel. She asks if he wants a more detailed explanation, and he declines the offer for now.  On the outside, Dong Mae greets Ae Shin, and her maid starts remembering him as butchers but quickly backs away when Dong Mae reminds her that he's cutting things other than meat. Ae Shin says that she heard about his return and witnessed his actions. Ae Shin explains that she never underestimates him as a butcher. Her disagreement lies in the fact that he is a traitor. Ae Shin goes in her cart, and Dong Mae stands frozen by her sharp criticism.

Dong Mae enters the hotel and notives Eugene heading upstairs. Hee Na gives him a fee, and he asks about Eugene. She offers to arrange meetings between them, as they seem to be attracted to each other. Then, she guesses that both he and Eugene are actually interested in Ae Shin. When Eugene entered his room, he found his belongings ransacked. He remembers when Gwan Soo’s told about Dong Mae’s people looking for Logan's house, so he finds Dong Mae at the hotel to confront him on this issue. Dong Mae claims that searching through Eugene's room is not his deed - in fact, he's just talking to his gang about doing word searches because Logan's widow is out of reach. Dong Mae states that others may be interested in this Joseon-American army, like Hwalbindang or the Straight Army. Eugene insists that Dong Mae is looking for more than just collecting money, and he proposes to work together. But Dong Mae refuses and says that he'll find it by herself. He warns that anyone who has what he is looking for will end up dead.

Dong Mae chooses a hard candy in a shop, and the owner refuses to take the money, afraid of his life. The shopkeepers were unmoved when Dong Mae threw the money and looked surprised that Dong Mae really just wanted candy. Dong Mae enjoys the candy as he walks and thinks about Ae Shin happily enjoying this same candy a few days ago. In a flashback, there was young Ae Shin in her cart stop before a big commotion along the way. The commotion was caused by the beating of Dong Mae's parents - a punishment for her mother to kill a man. Young Dong Mae watches the beating, hiding behind the wall, and Ae Shin has noticed him. She rescued him by taking him to the train to accompany her, and he asks why he saved her. She replied that Confucius talked about all life's worth, but that answer did not fit in with Dong Mae. He wipes the blood on his lips with his clothes and belittles his fancy noble education. Young Ae Shin looks at him in surprise, and Dong Mae stares back at almost crying, hands still clutching her skirt fabric.

Back in the present, Dong-mae sits in his hideout at the tarot reader's shop, and he hands the rest of his candy to her. He stays silent and his expression unreadable, but there seems to be a bit of awe for Dong-mae.

Eugene returns to the embassy to find Kyle from Joseon shopping. Kyle sports gat and mentions that all the nobles seem to wear this hat. He asked Eugene what he called, and he heard the term as "God" and joked that the Joseon people should always be with God. Eugene updated Kyle that they were in the middle of an interview with a rail passenger to identify a gun thief. In Eugene's office, Gwan Soo asks the train passenger crowd to think about who's on the train on his departure, but disappears when it arrives. One of the passengers recalls the person who stopped Ae Shin from firing at the Japanese troops, and correctly accused this guy as a missing gun thief.

Choon Shik, who is smarter than a pawn duo, arrives at the office, and Gwan Soo introduces him as a former government worker who works as a skilled artist sketch but loses his position after being caught in an affair with one of the palace maids. He drew a sketch of the culprit, and Eugene commented on how this guy was not handsome. Lol. Gwan-soo tells Eugene that he's calling Ae Shin back to the embassy, because the testimony of the passengers confirmed her presence there. Eugene shakes his head at Gwan Soo's overzealous commitment to this investigation, as he tries not to involve Ae Shin.

Ae Shin claims her authority spot on Eugene's desk once again, and she tries to explain that this is not her deed. He asks if Ae Shin sees a suspicious person on the train, and this time she confirms that she did it. She claims that she sees a suspicious person and cannot identify whether the person is American or Joseon, an enemy or an ally, clearly talking about Eugene. She makes a sharp comment and asks if Eugene needs the culprit this time, and he feels that she knows who the culprit is. Ae Shin insists that she does not know who the thief is, and Eugene thinks she's an accomplice. He does not know whether she is trying to help or undermine this investigation. She did not get the answer the first time so she asked again why Eugene did not accused her as the culprit to complete the investigation. Eugene did not give her an answer, again, but she used this opportunity to get rid of this interrogation. Regarding his ransacked room, he asks if Ae Shin is on the side of those who are invading his room. She asks if he'll believe it if she says she does not know, but he already assumes she knows and asks who ordered the search. Ae Shin is offended by his arrogant probe, but Eugene claims that she's just trying to protect them. He asks why, and he replied, "Because I can." As the last part of the interrogation, he showed her the men's sketches portrayed by the passengers. He asks if she's familiar with the man and if he's a noble. She admits that she's familiar, but she does not know if he's a noble. Eugene assumed that she was taking sides, but she explained that the man in the sketch was the Japanese soldiers who harassed the Joseon in the train.

The train passengers share food and applaud to frame the wretched Japanese soldier. They discuss the rumors of Japan and Russia engaged in war, and female passengers throw their food in anger that the poor are likely to suffer again.

In Japan, a man hobbled toward the prime minister and offered a reward. This is Wa Ik, Joseon's famous betrayer who first sided with the Americans to destroy Joseon, and he offers a valuable piece of porcelain as a farewell gift. He has been summoned by the king of Joseon, and he gave this porcelain vase to anticipate their reunion in Joseon. The prime minister informs Wan Ik of the fifth demon on the road to Nirvana that evokes the feeling that everything in this world is pathetic and useless. He picked up the porcelain and said that it reminded him of this demon. Later, he told Wan Ik to be this grieving demon to King Gojong by reminding him of Queen Min's death (she was killed in a Japanese attack) and the screams that night. He sues Wan Ik to make the king anxious and afraid of another attack. He promises to land at Joseon in three years and expects Wan Ik to hand Joseon over to him. Wan Ik promises to do it.

The young maidservant carrying Logan's baby walks down the village street hand in hand with her younger brother. The girl bought her sister a sweet snack, yeot. She loved working and earning money to treat her brother. She accidentally hit a bald Japanese soldier - the same person who harassed people on the train - and she apologized profusely. Her younger brother does not understand why he should be so sorry, but she tells him to be quiet and bow his head in fear.

Kyle walks with Eugene and greets Japanese women as they walk. He's just about to share her new knowledge about Japanese women and their black eyes, but he suddenly realizes that Eugene also has dark eyes. He feels uncomfortable close to Eugene to peek in her eyes, but their intimate moments are distracted by a kid crying for help. He ran straight to Eugene, asking him to help his sister. Kyle saw the situation and reported that a young girl was harassed by two armed Japanese soldiers. Eugene tries to tell Kyle to ignore the situation, because there are many other Joseon people who can help, but the boy asks for help. The boy's screams reminded Eugene of his desperate request to save his parents, and he could not ignore it. He approcahes the kid tells him that this is his fight. Eugene offers to help, but the boy must have a fight.

The boy stopped crying and understood. He grabs a stone and runs toward the Japanese army, who has pulled the envelope out of her hand and enjoyed their new fortune in American dollars. Then, the kid slammed the stone onto the bald soldier's head. He ran immediately to Eugene, and the Japanese soldiers caught his bloody head, cursing the Joseon man. Eugene told the kid to stay by his brother and fight from there. He recognized the bald Japanese soldier from the sketch of the culprit, and he quickly beat the two soldiers without weapons. Kyle watched from the sidelines and frightened the kid with his unfamiliar English, but fortunately her sister understood and thanked Kyle for his help. Eugene returns to the spectral group and reminds the kid to fight for himself from now on. As Eugene and Kayle are walking, Eugene was suddenly fixated on a man passing before them. He recognizes him as the son of the nobleman, a cruel nobleman who kills his parents. He is surprised that he soon recognizes him, and Kyle looks puzzled by Eugene's sudden focus on this mysterious person.

Meanwhile, the nobleman’s grandson, Hee Sung finally arrives at the port of Joseon, and he sighs in the scent of his home country. He checked in at Glory Hotel, where he was first greeted by Hee Na in Japanese. When she spoke to him in Korean, her tone changed and she noted that she was a Joseon. He said that Joseon has changed a lot in the past ten years, including one of his family's homes, which is now the Glory Hotel. Hee Na finally recognizes Hee Sung as the son of the richest family in Joseon and happily introduces herself better.

On the balcony of his hotel room, Eugene thought hard about the nobles he saw earlier that day. His thoughts are interrupted by Hee Sung, who comes out on his own balcony around the corner and tries to introduce himself to Eugene. He reaches for a handshake, but Eugene is not interested, unaware that the nobleman's son is standing right in front of him. That night, Eugene sits on his bed, repeating his childhood tragic moments while Hee Sung gambles at night.

The next morning, Hee Sung walks out of the pawnshop and runs to Eugene, who ignores him as he walks into the store. Gwan Soo waits for Eugene outside, and Hee Sung explains that he visited the pawnshop because he risked all his money last night and needs to buy flowers to meet his future wife. Looks like Hee-sung sells his watch, which Il Shik admire when Eugene walks into the store. Eugene knew that both were former slave hunters and asked them to find someone for them. He gave people names and gave twenty dollars in advance, offering twice as much if they found who he was looking for. Il Shik wonders if Eugene is planning on killing these people, and Eugene replied that he would not mind if these people were brought to him dead. This is not surprising for Il Shik, because the people he is looking for are famous for being the richest families after the king. He says that nine out of ten people know who they are, and Eugene claims that he is one of the ten who do not know. Il Shik tries to take the money, but Eugene holds it to gather more information. Il Shik goes on to say that there was only one time he lost a slave, and one slave belonged to this family. The slave is a boy of about nine years old, and Choon Shik interjects the story to reveal that they actually did not lose the child. Apparently, they have seen the kid's clothes poking out of the chest, but Il Shik insists that they ignore him. Il Shik admits that he sits in the chest where the boy is hiding, and he can feel the box shaking. He pitied the child who must have been very afraid to make the box tremble that much. Eugene realized that he was saved by these two men and thanked them, even though to them it sounded like he just thanked them for the information. He asks for this family location and goes to get revenge.

When Eugene arrives at the home, the nobleman's son (Hee Sung's father) looks curiously. His wife joined him, and they wonder who he is. He tells Eugene that the nobleman died a decade ago because of illness, and Eugene noticed the scar on the woman's neck, which confirms their identity as the target of his revenge.

Meanwhile, Hee Sung walks happily with the flowers in his hands and peeks at the Ae Shin’s home. Ae shin was hanging the laundry with her maid, and she stops thinking about her interrogation with Eugene. Her thoughts are distracted by her servant shouting at strangers peeking over the ledge, and it seems Hee Sung is still trying to catch Ae Shin's glance from a distance.

Eugene was also asked for his identity, but he remained silent. The wife noticed his military uniform but noted that it was not Joseon's uniform. Eugene quietly walks and offers his ornaments to the wife as a form of identification. The wife took the ornament, and after a while she realized it and fainted in fear. She tells her husband in tremblinng that this is a slave boy who runs away. The eyes of the husband widened, realizing the fate of their reunion. Eugene asks if they ever found the corpse of his parents, and he directs his gun to him, who then falls to the ground beside his wife. Eugene demands to know if his parents have been buried and stand on the nobility.

At Ae Shin's house, the maid recognizes the man peeking over the ledge as Ae Shin's fiancĂ© and warmly greets Hee Sung. When Hee-sung arrives to see Ae Shin up close, he admires her beauty and expresses her regret by not returning soon.
