Episode 5 mr. sunshine (2018 tv series)

Hee Sung, son of the richest noble family in Joseon, arrives at Ae Shin's house and expresses his regret for not coming sooner. He offers her fiancé the flower, but Ae Shin does not take them and just stares at him with a straight face. He wonders if it's a flower or him that she does not like.

Meanwhile, at Hee Sung's house, Eugene seeks revenge on the family who killed his parents. Pointing a gun to Hee Sung's father, Eugene demands to know where his parents are buried, but he admits that he does not know because all the slaves are buried together. Eugene threatens to destroy the noble family if they do not recover the body of his parents and tell them to tell the US embassy if they do. The nobleman and his wife were puzzled as to why they were telling the US embassy, so Eugene introduced himself as an American army. Then he lowered his gun and walked out of the house.

At Ae Shin's house, Hee Sung apologizes for being late. Ae Shin accuses him of arriving unannounced after ten years, and tells him to arrange another time to return because her grandfather goes to salute their ancestors. Hee Sung asks if Ae Shin will be less upset if he comes back at a better time, but Ae Shin is not so easy to appease. She claims that she is not angry; on the contrary, she is surprised that Hee Sung is exactly as she imagined: pale, soft, and weak. Hee Sung accepts Ae Shin's humiliation with lightness and laughs. He acknowledges that Ae Shin is not as he imagined and says that she is like a flower. With a sincere gaze, he offers the flowers again, and Ae Shin stares back.

A waiter shyly reports to Dong Mae about Hee Sung's return from Japan and his visit to Ae Shin's house. Dong Mae offers generous payment for this information, and the waiter thanked him, promising to report more news to Dong Mae. Quoted by this news, Dong Mae looks more irritated than usual. Dong Mae takes his anger at his innocent men by beating them to the ground. His right hand, Yujo, stops him and offers to take care of the situation. Dong Mae insists that he's upset by a Japanese dressed in basic dress who slanders the reputation of the Japanese Empire, but it sounds like Dong-sue convinces himself that this outburst of anger has nothing to do with Ae Shin's fiancée.

Eun San and his student offer china pieces to the foreign minister in favor of Japan and claims that he is the first to receive the coveted porcelain amongst everyone who begs the pieces. The Minister throws him a goldbar as payment, and Eun San thanks him for his confession. As Eun San goes with his students, we discover that porcelain is actually his student’s work. His students were trembling with fear that it will be recognized, Eun San celebrated his apprenticeship and suggested that they treat themselves food. As they walk, Eun San recognizes Eugene on a horse and thinks back to their mysterious interactions back in his house, where Eugene seems to treat him with a frightening intimacy.

Eugene's friend and boss, Kyle, is waiting for him when he returns to his office and asks if he's taking his revenge. Eugene seems to accuse Gwan Soo, who admits that he revealed Eugene's schedule to Kyle because he's so insistent. Kyle breathed a sigh of relief when Eugene implied that he did not kill the nobles, and Eugene admitted that he was not sure what he would give to his enemies. Gwan-soo mentions that Kyle was not the only one who asked for Eugene's schedule, and Eugene came face to face with the kid he saved from the Japanese army. The kid wants to reciprocate for his help and offers to do anything. This situation reminds Eugene of his youth, when he begged the American man to let him pay his debts. He realizes now how uncomfortable and contradictory the person is, and he refuses the kid's offer. From around the corner, Eun San sees this interaction.

During the archery practice, Ae Shin's aunt expertly fires her arrows to the target, and her brother-in-law praises her all-encompassing talent. But the comment becomes hand-back when the sister-in-law says the exception to Aunt's talent is the lack of a son to inherit the grandfather's wealth. The sister-in-law suggested that she adopted a son so that all inheritance did not match the family-in-law, but she was not too keen on this suggestion.

After nailing another arrow at the target, Ae Shin’s aunt says that she will follow Grandpa's wishes, and if they choose to adopt a son to inherit family wealth, she has no intention of adopting her sister-in-law’s children. They wonder why Hee Sung's mother is missing from their regular archery meeting, and she assumes that she may be embarrassed to show her face after Hee Sung has just returned after ten years away from her fiancée. In fact, the absence of Hee Sung's mother is due to the shock faced by Eugene who takes revenge. Her husband condemned Joseon's modernization for allowing such a lowly man to dare to point arms at nobleman. Being fully aware of Eugene's threat to their family, Hee Sung's mother decides to send a telegram to Hee Sung, whom she believes is still in Japan. She wants him to stay away from Joseon until they get rid of Eugene, and she rushes out to send this important message. However, as we know, Hee Sung is already in Joseon and gambles at Glory Hotel in a gamble with Ae Soon, Ae Shin's cousin, and gambling friends. Ae Soon confidently puts all her money into the pot, but her impressive hand can hardly be beaten - this time by Hee Sung. He gladly shares the wealth among all women, though Ae Soon still looks confused by her loss.
Ae Shin moves back and forth in her room while her maid expresses Hee Sung's approval, saying that he is handsome and even carries flowers. But Ae Shin finds this unsatisfactory - he just carries flowers. Ae Shin rehearses shooting at her hideout and thinks of Hee Sung’s comment about her like a flower. Rather than feeling flattered, Ae Shin considers this the reason for breaking her engagement.

Eugene drove across the forest on his horse. He visits the nobleman’s old house, where he lives and serves with his parents. He remembered moments with her mother, and in a flashback, there is a conversation between them. Her mother looks at the flower and tells him that she wants to be reincarnated as a flower in a big house that he will live in. Eugene nostalgic while watching this barren house.

Dong Mae continues thinking about Ae Shin's fiancé who returns to Joseon. He "practiced" the martial arts with his fellows, who basically only aggressively threw them to the ground. His man, Yujo, stopped him.l

Hee Sung happily strolling around town, greeting the locals and teasing women. He saw a woman who looked familiar, and he suddenly realized that it was her mother. Surprised and afraid to see Hee Sung in Joseon, his mother scolded him, and they headed to Glory Hotel to discuss things. Hee Sung's mother tells him to stay away from their home and not to tell his real name. However, two girls women walk by their table and greet Hee Sung. It's obviously too late for that, so she scolds him and chases him up the stairs as Hee Sung runs into his room.

Ae Shin looks at Hee Sung's flowers in her room. While she’s taking the flower (she will throw them away), she is called out by her servant. She goes outside to find a cart and a messenger from Glory Hotel gives a love letter from Hee Sung. He writes his invitation to Glory Hotel in a flowery language, and Ae Shin looks offended by this romantic movement. At Glory Hotel, Ae Shin confronts Hee Sung about his offensive stance to invite her to this hotel, and Hee Sung explains that this is how dating is in Tokyo. Ae Shin reminds him that they are in Joseon, and she expresses her dissatisfaction with this engagement, honestly admitting that she is looking for an excuse to decide. Hee Sung tells her to give up because he likes her. But Ae Shin is impatient. She admitted that initially, she waited for him. After five years, her grandfather was worried, her aunt cursed him, and Ae Shin was disappointed. She said that even though they had never met, she embraced the promise of their family as her own. She accuses him, "How can you protect a person if you can not even keep an appointment with a woman?" With this disappointment, she decides to forget him.

Hee Sung accepts Ae Shin's confession and proposes a compromise. They can cancel their marriage, and he can be blamed, but he suggests that they remain friends. Eugene walked into the hotel and looked at both curiously. Ae Shin notices him and takes this opportunity to leave by telling Hee Sung that he's called by the US embassy. He approaches Eugene and tells him to lead the way, and Eugene does it. Hee Sung notes this awkward interaction. Eugene takes Ae Shin through town until they find a quiet place to talk, and Eugene asks about her relationship with Hee Sung. He comments on how Ae Shin is considered a valuable entity. He asks if they're friends and Ae Shin explains that they're just friends, which makes Eugene wonder if a man and a woman can become friends. Ae Shin sees Eugene's name embroidered on her hat and tries to show off the English she's learned so far. But he can not get past one letter. Eugene smiles amused, and Ae Shin tries to impress him by sharing long English phrases she's learned in school: "Where are you from?" She asked in English. This question triggers a flashback to Eugene, from his youth and to the present day. He murmured softly that everyone seemed to ask that question. Eugene asks if she's finished using him (to escape from Hee Sung) and Ae Shin apologizes for that. She tells him that she will consider it to repay the debt when she allows him to ride along on the boat. But Eugene has no intention of repaying his debt first and insists that this time, Ae Shin is indebted to him. He walked away back to the hotel.

Dong Mae reports to the Japanese minister in Joseon about the missing documents. He asks if it really exists and indicates that they are waiting to appear, because they have no clue to trace the document. The Japanese consulate expressed his frustration about the missing documents and ordered Dong Mae to shut his mouth in front of Wan Ik, who will  arrives tomorrow. He also warns Dong Mae not to conspire with Wan Ik, as they are both descendants of Joseon. Dong Mae is offended by this and claims that he always considers himself a Japanese.

Dong Mae greets Wan Ik on his arrival from Japan, and he avoids the question of Japanese minister or his illicit funds by asking about Wan Ik's journey. He acts like a sycophant and offers to report each information about certain fund to Wan Ik. He claims that he feels faithful to Joseon today, and Wan Ik grins at Dong Mae's intelligence. Before they board the train, Wan Ik sees a woman's sketch posted on the bulletin and rips out and takes the sketch. On the train, Wan Ik comments on how Joseon has modernized. He mentions the rumors of a hotel in Hanseong. Dong Mae asks if he wants to stay there, but Wan Ik refuses. He asks why he will only stay there for a few days if he can have that place.

At Glory Hotel, two fencers practice in the yard, and the winner is the owner of Glory Hotel, Hee Na. His opponent asks why she is so competitive to win, and she replies that she has many enemies. Her worker gives her a glass of water and tries to report something, and Hee Na belittles until the worker mentions that it's about Eugene's room. The worker explained that Eugene had asked for his room to be cleaned, and she saw that it looked like it had been searched. Hee Naa takes note of this unwanted news and tells her workers to keep silent about it, as it can make another guest alarm.

Eun San sits alone near his home and gathers clues to confirm Eugene's identity. Apparently, Eun San is the one who searched Eugene's room, having determined that the US consulate has a high chance of hiding the coveted document. He orders a female spy to inform when Eugene's room will be empty, and the spy has reported that the US consulate is a bit mysterious - he has all the documents to confirm his nationality, but he looks like a Joseon guy. While searching through Eugene's room, Eun-san has found an ornament, which reminds him of a young boy who offers this ornament as payment to help him escape to the US. Eun San remembers his annoying interaction with Eugene, when he comes to his house and talks to him. Finally he realized that the young boy who escaped was Eugene, and he laughed. His celebration was disturbed by gunfire nearby, and Eun Sun’s student confirms that it was the voice of the Japanese army training. Eun San tells his students to look after his head and show that they cook dinner together. When the Japanese army practiced, the bald Japanese warrior (whom Eugene rescued a kid and his sister from) recalled that Eugene belonged to US troops. He impulsively decides to take revenge and orders his men to follow him to the embassy.

When the Japanese soldiers marched to the embassy, the kid who was rescued by Eugene hiding nearby and immediately ran to Eugene's office to report this important news. He cries when he tells Eugene that this is all his fault - that Eugene should intervene because he's too weak and now Japan will hurt Eugene. Eugene consoled him by saying that he intervened not because the boy was weak, but because Joseon was weak. He says that the US is strong and will protect him, unlike Joseon. Meanwhile, the kid continued to cry out of fear that the Japanese army would hit and punish Eugene. His crying entertains Eugene, who does not seem to be worried about Japan beating them up. Then he wondered how the young kid was so fast, and through his cries the kid explained that he was climbing the wall to reach his room.

Eugene walked down the steps to join his troops standing face-to-face with the Japanese army led by Tsuda. The Japanese army’s translator is asked to translate a request to arrest the American soldiers who wounded a Japanese soldier. The translator conveyed a message in Korean to Gwan Soo, then he translated it to English. Eugene responds in English that he also has a wound - in his heart - and Gwan-soo struggles to deliver a diplomatic translation, which eventually becomes a simple apology. Tsuda did not take apologies well and demanded that they cooperate with the investigation. After going through two translation summaries, Kyle gets a message and gladly agrees to be caught to fulfill their demands. He laughs in admiration about the incident in Joseon, and Tsuda is angry yelling at his translator to explain why Kyle laughs. The Japanese translator asks Gwan Soo why Kyle laughs, and Gwan Soo tells him that it's clear that Kyle scoffs at Japan's demands to arrest him for an investigation. The Japanese translator is angry at Gwan Soo, asking how he can translate this to Tsuda, and Gwan Soo decides that it's none of his business how he translates the message. They started fighting aggressively until Tsuda had enough and ordered to them to stay. The Japanese aim their weapons at the American army, who responds well. Eugene took it without an interpreter and called two Japanese soldiers, Tsuda and his friend, by name. Eugene explains in Japanese that the US has information information beyond their expectations. He told the two reckless Japanese soldiers whether they meant or not, they had just declared war on the United States. A bullet will determine the fate of this declaration of war, and Eugene threatens to make the first shot. Realizing the consequences of their actions, the Japanese army retreated. Kyle praised Eugene's victory, and Eugene repeated what President Roosevelt had told them before deploying to Joseon: "Speak gently and bring a big stick." With it settled, Kyle reminds Eugene that they should focus on identifying the thief, which Eugene has evaded.

Gwan Soo and the Japanese translators reconciled themselves to Jjajangmyun, and they respected themselves for degrading the situation to prevent war. The Japanese translator offers to give him a list of armed men if Gwan Soo buys him mandoo, so of course, Gwan Soo did it.

In his office, Eugene thinks of Ae Shin's words to Eun San and he mentions about Gunner Jang. Gwan Soo interrupts him with a list of new clues, which he receives from the other translator. He thought that a gun thief was probably a man familiar with weapons, so he gave Eugene a list of shooters. Eugene expressed his confusion on Gwan Soo's persistence and asked if Gunner Jang was on the list. Gwan Soo confirms this and seems proud that they are on the same page in this investigation. Gunner Jang, or we knew him as Seung Gu, visited a friend's metal shop. He reveals an American gun and asks his friend to deconstruct to analyze its parts. He also asks his friend to make it as before, because he intends to return it.

Ae Shin's maid tells Ae Shin about American soldiers who beat Japanese soldiers to rescue Joseon's children, and that Joseon people celebrate America's efforts to help Joseon. Ae Shin (especially in her shooting practice suit, which means her servant knows some parts of her secret) insists that there is no country in Joseon to help, not even the United States. Her maid wonders why the American army helps, and Ae Shin quotes Eugene in his response: Because he can. When Ae Shin walks down the mountain, she finds Eugene waiting for her at the entrance to her hiding place. She was not surprised by his presence but demanded to know what he was doing there. Eugene informs her that he started identifying all those affiliated with weapons as part of his investigation, and Ae Shin directs his weapon towards him, threatened by this potential investigation. He asks if he's here to investigate her or Seung Gu, but Eugene claims it's not his intention. If that's true, then he'll bring American soldiers with him, he said. He explained that initially it was curiosity, then observation, and finally now he's experiencing it. When he first arrives at Joseon, he vows to do nothing, because whatever he does will only help to destroy Joseon. Ae Shin says that he's already contributed to the destruction of Joseon, but she warns that he's just doing that. He should have caught her when he could, but his curiosity stopped him. He's not sure if it's because Joseon has changed or if Ae Shin is unusual, but he finally decides to close his eyes.
Now dealing with the consequences, Eugene tells Ae Shin to stay in her noble character for now because the American army is bound to visit next. Ae Shin drops her gun and asks why he saved the Joseon kid, and Eugene replies that he thinks he can win. Ae Shin does not trust him completely. When Eugene starts to leave, Ae Shin asks which direction he is heading. He says that he will also go there, which is the same path that Eugene used when he first suspected Ae Shin's secret identity. So they walk side by side through the woods, with Ae Shin's servants watching them from behind.

Eugene asks Ae Shin why she is trying to save Joseon, and she stops and enthusiastically answers, "Although Joseon is a rough, he has experienced 500 years of history through many wars. In every way, people are risking their lives to protect this nation. That Joseon was peacefully torn apart, first by China, then Russia, and now Japan and even the US. Does not someone have to fight against this struggling nation?” Eugene asks why should Ae Shin fight for Joseon, and she asks why not. Eugene is silent, with his eyes filled with emotion, and Ae Shin tells him that he need not worry. He claims that he is not worried about her. Ae Shin remarks on how the low flying bird indicates that the storm is above them and it will rain.

Sure enough, it rained in the night, and Eugene looked pensive as he looked out the window of his office. He sees Gwan Soo escorting two people to the embassy in the rain, and he confesses one person as a servant of the nobleman who beat him the day his parents died.

Hee Sung sits in his hotel room with a cigarette in hand. He thinks of her mother's request to get away from the house and the scar on her neck. The scars and warnings to stay hidden in the hotel seem to be a mystery to him.
Dong Mae enters the bookstore and notices a cart pull to the store. Ae Shin gets out of the cart and walks to the store. She does not look happy to see Dong Mae, who takes out the candy and offers to leave. She did not feel the need, because they were both customers in the store, and she agreed to wait his turn. Ae Shin's maid follows her into the shop and backs away for fear when she sees Dong Mae. She knocks the items on the shelf, and Ae Shin orders her maid to look for the owner while she cleans up the mess. The maid runs off to look for the the owner, leaving Dong Mae and Ae Shin alone together

Dong Mae carelessly kicks the brush into the pile, but Ae Shin pick up the items. He joins her and watches her skirt brushing his hand. Ae Shin looks shocked when she sees him staring at her skirt. She immediately stands in defense, but Dong Mae grabs the end of her skirt.  Ae Shin wants to know what he's doing, and Dong Mae looks up and says that he's not doing anything. He continues to hold the edge of her skirt, and Ae Shin looks at him with fear.
